Winter Moon was inspired by Arctic Owl & Winter Moon, a fantastic watercolor created by artist Charles Burchfield, combined with a poem that I wrote back in 2006 called “Sleep Song.” The extremely talented David Mussen composed the music, and along with Jonathan’s amazing sound engineering — helped to paint this very dream-like piece.

The best songs have a mystery to them, a little room where the imagination of listener can breathe. What is left unsaid in the lyrics is where the story lies.

This song takes place in the not so distant future when robots control all of the world, rather than the two thirds currently under their domain. I was thinking Gene Autry.
This song is what happens when you share a particularly funny childhood memory with Jonathan Hughes. I told the story about “playing in Uncle Cisco’s truck”, Jonathan said “you should write a song about that” — and I did. Endless thanks to my talented friend Jim Whitford, who helped tweak the lyrics and worked out the total bluesy feel of the song. Jim’s guitar playing in this tune is so good…it creeps into your head and takes up eternal residence.

Designed to make us laugh as we wrote each line, some people are just superior at wrapping gifts. This one came quick, as Jim and I hadn’t made music together in a while and I was visiting on vacation. Full of joy, this one was.

I wanted to write something as a duet, a sort of dialogue between Doug and Lisa, but they arrange it all themselves and made it sound all nice and purdy.

I had been reading Bells In Winter by Czeslaw Milosz when I wrote this song. The last verse was really written with Alex in mind so it meant a lot to me that she sang this song.

I was thinking a lot of that wonderful little book of translations by Kenneth Rexroth 100 Poems from the Japanese, when I worked on this song. I remember it came to me rather late in the game and Dee came to the rescue and as usual knocked it out of the park in no time.
